The House of Representatives has approved two significant bills that intertwine environmental responsibility with key life milestones. House Bill Nos. 9587 and 9588, known as the Family Tree Planting Act and the Graduation Legacy for Reforestation Act, are currently poised for their third and final reading.
The Family Tree Planting Act mandates a unique environmental responsibility for parents. According to this proposed legislation, all parents, irrespective of their marital status, are required to plant two trees for every child born to them. This requirement is linked to the issuance of the child’s birth certificate. The act provides flexibility in terms of where these trees can be planted, allowing parents to plant them either within their own home premises or in areas designated by the local barangay council.
Simultaneously, the Graduation Legacy for Reforestation Act targets the youth, particularly students. This bill proposes that graduating students in senior high school and college plant two trees as a prerequisite for their graduation. The act includes exceptions for students who are physically handicapped or have special needs.
The overarching goal of these bills is to reinforce reforestation efforts and uphold the Filipino people’s right to a balanced and healthful ecology. This initiative is in alignment with the country’s commitment to preserving natural harmony and rhythm.
