A durian vendor took two bullets to the chest Sunday night, July 5, 2026, when unidentified gunmen opened fire on her and her sister in Barangay Ubalde, R. Castillo, Agdao District, Davao City, leaving both women hospitalized and setting off a manhunt for the attackers.
The wounded vendor, referred to only by the alias “Nita,” was reportedly selling durian near the scene when the assailants struck. Her sister, known by the alias “Gina,” was hit in the buttocks during the same attack but managed to run from the area and call on nearby residents for help.
Emergency responders from the Barangay Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (BDRRMC) of Ubalde reached the scene early and tended to one of the women before both were taken to a hospital. Their current condition has not been officially disclosed by authorities.
For neighbors, the burst of gunfire brought chaos. One resident said she was washing clothes when the shots rang out. Unsure at first of what had taken place, she went outside and found a woman on the ground, wounded. She described watching one victim’s young son sob after seeing his injured mother, calling the scene deeply distressing for a child who had witnessed such violence up close.
Officers have since sealed off the location and launched follow-up operations aimed at tracking down those behind the attack. They are also collecting statements from witnesses and examining any evidence that could clarify how the shooting unfolded.
What drove the gunmen to open fire remains unknown, with investigators saying the motive has not yet been established.
