New agreement helps returning OFWs land jobs in the steel industry

Returning overseas Filipino workers seeking employment in the steel manufacturing sector now have a direct pathway into SteelAsia Manufacturing Corporation, following a memorandum of agreement the firm entered into with the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW).

The deal, tied to the DMW’s National Reintegration Program, runs for three years. It grants SteelAsia entry to a database of homebound OFWs whose backgrounds, technical abilities, and job classifications match the openings the company has set aside for suitable candidates.

Beyond matching workers to roles, the two parties committed to helping reintegrated OFWs settle into domestic employment within the steel industry without disruption.

SteelAsia chairman and CEO Benjamin Yao framed the collaboration as central to the company’s broader goals. “We are honored to work with the DMW as part of the company’s mission to contribute to nation-building alongside our modern heroes. By working together, we are not only bringing breadwinners closer to their families—we are also getting back world class skills and experience to develop the country’s steel industry,” he said. He described the arrangement as “a win-win-win for returning OFWs, SteelAsia, and the steel industry.”

Yao and DMW Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac headed the signing, which took place on June 30 in Quezon City as part of the Migrant Workers Health Summit 2026.

Among those on hand for the event were former OFWs already employed at SteelAsia’s forthcoming steel sections mill in Lemery, Batangas.
