The blue, red and white of the Philippine flag wrapped Jordan Clarkson’s shoulders as he rode through Lower Manhattan, microphone in hand, soaking in the New York Knicks’ first championship celebration in more than half a century. Footage shared by News5 captured the Fil-Am guard pointing to the crowd, flag draped over his frame, during the team’s title parade through The Big Apple.
The procession followed the Knicks’ 2026 NBA Championship win over the San Antonio Spurs by a matter of days. With the title, Clarkson became the first player of Filipino descent to claim an NBA ring — a milestone that turned the parade into a moment of national pride for Filipinos watching from across the Pacific.
That pride was formally acknowledged back in New York. The Philippine Consulate General issued a statement saluting the guard’s place in the achievement. “We also take pride in Filipino-American Jordan Clarkson, shooting guard of the New York Knicks, whose achievement is a proud moment for the Filipino diaspora,” it said.
Clarkson’s tie to the Philippines traces to his maternal grandmother’s roots, which made him eligible to wear the national-team jersey. He suited up at the 2018 Asian Games after the NBA granted what it called a “one-time exception,” and went on to lead the country in scoring at the 2023 FIBA World Cup, averaging 26 points per game.
The championship arrived in his 12th NBA season, after earlier stops with the Lakers, Cavaliers and Jazz. He filled a steady bench role for New York through the 2025-26 campaign — a supporting figure on the roster, but the face of the moment for an entire country that has long claimed him as its own.
