An all-Filipino group of divers descended into the waters off Dubai Public Beach in Jumeirah on Friday, June 12, unfurling the Philippine flag beneath the surface to commemorate the country’s 128th Independence Day.
The underwater tribute was led by instructor trainer and dive instructor Raynold Dee Herbito, joined by dive instructor and media executive director Fred Aguirre, film production specialist Arnel Pascual, video creator Mark Michael Curativo, and photographer Cristopher Dan Edralin. Photos from the dive show the team gathered around the national colors several meters below the surface, holding the flag taut against the current.
The gesture placed a familiar patriotic ritual in an unfamiliar setting. Flag-raising ceremonies anchor Independence Day observances across the Philippines and within Filipino communities abroad, but the Jumeirah group chose to carry theirs to the seabed — a nod both to their craft and to the hundreds of thousands of Filipinos who mark the day far from home.
Araw ng Kalayaan commemorates June 12, 1898, when General Emilio Aguinaldo proclaimed Philippine independence from Spain at his ancestral home in Kawit, Cavite, as the flag was unfurled and the national march was played for the first time. Full sovereignty would come decades later, on July 4, 1946, but June 12 has stood as the country’s National Day since the commemoration was moved there to honor the original declaration.
In Manila, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. led the main rites at the Quirino Grandstand, where a parade of uniformed personnel, government vehicles, and cultural performers marked the anniversary. Thousands of kilometers away, the small group off Jumeirah offered their own quieter version of the same act of remembrance.
