Shoppers heading to City Centre Deira this June will find more than retail offers, as the mall rolls out a series of activities marking Philippine Independence Day for the emirate’s Filipino residents.
The schedule opens on June 11 with a flag-raising ceremony set for 2:00 PM, presided over by the Philippine Ambassador to the UAE, His Excellency Alfonso Ferdinand Ver. Organizers said the rites will be paired with a live marching band and a programme of festive segments built around the occasion.
A separate retail promotion follows on June 12 and 13 through a partnership with logistics firm Pinas Cargo. Customers who reach a minimum spend of AED 200 at the mall during those two days qualify for shipping discounts of up to 50 percent on parcels bound for the Philippines. According to the mall, the cargo offer is capped at the first 500 shoppers, with purchases at Carrefour excluded from the qualifying amount.
City Centre Deira described the lineup as both a commemoration and a community gathering, inviting Filipino residents to take part in the ceremony and make use of the shipping perks while they last.
Independence Day, known in Filipino as Araw ng Kalayaan, falls on June 12 and traces back to the 1898 declaration in Kawit, Cavite, when General Emilio Aguinaldo and revolutionary forces broke from Spanish rule. The date was formalized as the country’s national day in 1964, replacing the earlier July 4 observance tied to the American colonial era.
