Angat Buhay mobilizes volunteer network for Mindanao quake response

The Angat Buhay Foundation said it is working with its Angat Bayanihan Volunteer Network to deliver immediate aid to communities hit by Monday’s powerful earthquake in Mindanao, as the group moves to track conditions on the ground and gauge what affected residents need most.

In a public advisory, the organization said its volunteers would monitor developments, assess urgent requirements, and prepare for any response efforts the situation may demand. The message was accompanied by an image of a collapsed commercial structure, credited to Philippine Weather System/Pacific Storm Update, illustrating the scale of damage in the disaster zone.

Founded by former Vice President Leni Robredo in July 2022 and registered as Angat Pinas, Inc., Angat Buhay carries disaster relief and rehabilitation among its core advocacies, alongside education, health and nutrition, and community engagement. The foundation grew out of the volunteer movement built during Robredo’s 2022 presidential campaign and bills itself as one of the country’s largest civilian volunteer networks.

Disaster response has been a central thrust of the group’s work. It has provided relief and rehabilitation to tens of thousands of families across dozens of displaced communities since its founding, and in 2024 signed an agreement to establish a dedicated disaster preparedness and response center to train volunteers and anchor its relief operations.

The mobilization comes after a magnitude 7.8 quake struck off Sarangani at 7:37 a.m. Monday, toppling buildings in General Santos City and prompting tsunami warnings across coastal Mindanao that reached as far as Indonesia and Japan.
