A sophisticated criminal syndicate used an elaborate princess impersonation scheme to steal AED 12 million worth of luxury oud from a Dubai merchant — only to be dismantled by investigators within half a day.
Dubai Police confirmed that four members of the eight-person gang have been arrested, while the remaining four, including the woman who posed as royalty, fled the country after the crime and are now subjects of a red notice issued through international law enforcement channels.
The operation began when two syndicate members visited a high-end oud shop in a local market, telling the owner that a prominent princess would soon be in Dubai and intended to purchase premium oud in significant quantities. The merchant compiled an extensive selection of his finest stock in anticipation of the sale.
When the owner expressed a wish to meet the alleged princess in person, the gang obliged — and staged an entire setting to support the deception. A furnished villa, hired bodyguards, and an elaborate dinner reception were arranged to give the encounter an air of authenticity.
At the villa, the gang asked the merchant to transfer his luxury oud into bags they described as more appropriate for a princess. He complied, emptying his personal bags and repacking the goods into containers provided by the group. A woman posing as the princess then appeared briefly to meet him and discuss finalising the transaction before excusing herself.
The merchant was told to wait while the bags were supposedly being prepared for return. Instead, the gang swapped the luxury oud for ordinary wood and handed the bags back to him. He left the villa unaware of the exchange.
It was only the following day, after his calls went unanswered, that the merchant opened the bags and discovered the deception. He filed a report with Dubai Police’s Command and Control Centre.
The General Department of Criminal Investigations responded immediately, deploying a specialised team to the villa and deploying analytical software, surveillance technology, and camera footage to trace those responsible. Four suspects were in custody and the full consignment of stolen oud had been recovered within 12 hours of the report being filed.
The four remaining gang members, who fled the UAE shortly after the crime, have been formally identified by Dubai Police.
