From staff nurse to successful entrepreneur in the UAE

Twelve years ago, Junah Balungcas embarked on an overseas journey that began with a nursing position in the UAE. Today, she embodies the Filipino spirit through her roles as a Unit Manager at Kanad Hospital and as the proud owner of Baofriend Restaurant.

Junah’s career trajectory is a vivid illustration of her mantra, “Success will only come if you’re responsible enough to know what you’re doing and who you’re dealing with.”

Her first job abroad in Al Ain was a significant milestone, but it was just the beginning.

“My overseas career began when I arrived in the UAE in 2011,” she recalls.

The establishment of her restaurant, Baofriend, marked a pivotal moment in her life.

“Opening our first branch is already a highlight of my career,” Junah shares with The Global Filipino Magazine.

Her ambitions, however, extend beyond the present, as she eagerly plans to expand her business, a move that excites her for the potential opportunities to reach deeper into the community.

A journey shaped by challenges and opportunities

Junah’s decision to work abroad stemmed from a family discussion: her mother’s encouragement contrasted with her father’s reservations.

“It wasn’t an easy decision, but I realized that it was also a great chance to advance my career and become more acquainted with more walks of life,” she explains.

Before her journey abroad, Junah balanced her role as a nurse in the Philippines with helping out in her family business. This experience honed her skills in managing multiple responsibilities. Her early career also included community work, enhancing her interpersonal skills.

Junah finds immense satisfaction in her dual roles as a nurse and an entrepreneur.

“As a Nurse, helping people by providing a high standard of quality care and managing our department to make sure we offer the best service,” she describes her passion for healthcare.

As an entrepreneur, she takes pride in creating jobs and contributing to the community.

Working overseas has offered Junah a spectrum of opportunities. It’s not just about career advancement; it’s about the rich tapestry of interactions with diverse individuals and witnessing the success stories of fellow Filipinos.

“It helps me interact with more people from diverse backgrounds and see the journey of my countrymen,” she states.

Overcoming struggles and looking ahead

Junah’s journey was not without its challenges. Climbing the nursing ranks and venturing into the F&B industry as a novice required immense determination.

“Integrity, loving what you do, and always being prepared when an opportunity comes is very vital,” she advises.

Her perseverance and faith played a crucial role in overcoming these hurdles.

Looking to the future, Junah aspires to give back more significantly.

“My bigger dream is to – hopefully – build a medical center or hospital in our hometown,” she shares, motivated by the desire to aid underserved communities.

This vision drives her forward, fueling her ambition and dedication.

Junah’s advice to her compatriots abroad centers on financial wisdom and preparedness.

“Financial literacy is very important… Opportunity comes to those who are ready,” she emphasizes.

Her insights are grounded in her observations and experiences, offering valuable guidance for fellow overseas Filipinos.

Finally, Junah teases exciting developments for Baofriend.

“Keep an eye out for Baofriend – because it’s going places very, very soon,” she hints, promising an expansion of her culinary venture.
