TikTok removes over 4.5 million videos in the Philippines for guideline violations

TikTok has announced the removal of over 4.5 million videos in the Philippines during the second quarter of 2023. According to the social media giant’s latest Community Guidelines Enforcement Report, a total of 4,596,796 videos were taken down between April and June for violating platform rules.

The report highlights TikTok’s proactive measures in content moderation, with over 92 percent of the offending videos removed before receiving any views. Furthermore, 96.3 percent of these videos were eliminated within 24 hours of posting.

On a global scale, TikTok’s enforcement actions were even more extensive, with the platform removing over 106 million videos in the same period. Automation played a significant role in this process, accounting for the removal of approximately 66 million videos. Notably, 6 million videos were later restored following further review.

A breakdown of the reasons for global video removals reveals that 39 percent contained sensitive and mature themes. Additionally, 28 percent of the videos violated guidelines related to the sale of regulated goods and other commercial activities. Another 14.5 percent were removed for breaching rules on safety and civility, while 10 percent were flagged for potentially harmful impacts on viewers’ mental health.
