One person was killed and 19 others were injured after a workers’ bus came to a sudden halt in the middle of Al Yalayis Street and was struck from behind by a truck, Dubai Police have confirmed.
The crash occurred near the Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Bridge on the road toward Emirates Road. Initial findings indicate the bus stopped abruptly due to a technical malfunction, leaving it exposed in the path of oncoming traffic. The truck driver behind it reportedly failed to maintain a safe distance or notice the stationary vehicle in time to avoid the collision.
Of the 19 survivors, eight sustained critical injuries, two were moderately hurt, and nine escaped with minor injuries. All were transported to hospital for treatment.
Traffic patrols and accident investigation teams responded swiftly to the scene, securing the area, managing traffic flow, facilitating rescue operations, and redirecting vehicles through alternate routes to ease congestion.
Brigadier Jumaa Salem Bin Suwaidan, Director of the General Department of Traffic, said stopping in the middle of the road is among the most dangerous traffic violations recorded in the emirate. “This violation is one of the most dangerous traffic violations, as it leads to serious accidents that result in deaths and serious injuries,” he said. He urged any driver whose vehicle cannot be moved safely off the road to contact police immediately rather than leave it in the path of traffic.
Dubai Police noted that the violation carries a fine of AED 1,000 and six black points, while obstructing traffic under Article 98 is a separate offence penalised with a fine of AED 500. Drivers involved in breakdowns are advised to switch on hazard lights, place a warning triangle behind the vehicle where possible, move passengers away from the roadway, and call authorities without delay.
