Crackdown on misinformation continues after ex-broadcaster’s arrest

Authorities have reaffirmed efforts to pursue individuals accused of spreading false information, following the apprehension of former broadcaster Jay Sonza in connection with a cyberlibel complaint.

The National Bureau of Investigation carried out the arrest Thursday night after a court in Pasay issued a warrant. NBI Director Melvin Matibag confirmed that Sonza remains under the agency’s custody.

In a statement, Presidential Communications Office chief Dave Gomez said authorities will continue coordinating with enforcement agencies, media organizations, and digital platforms to address the spread of false information.

“We will continue to work with law enforcement, the media and responsible online platforms to identify, investigate and prosecute those who disseminate falsehoods,” Gomez said.

He stressed that freedom of expression should not be used to justify the circulation of misleading claims, adding: “Public discourse must remain free, but it must also be truthful, fair, and orderly. Speak freely, but not falsely.”

The case stems from allegations that fabricated medical records involving Ferdinand Marcos Jr. were circulated, prompting legal action.

Officials also highlighted that several similar complaints have already been elevated to the justice department for further investigation and potential prosecution.
