UAE charity clears debts of 100 individuals in Q1 2026, spending AED 700,000

A Sharjah-based humanitarian organisation has resolved the financial cases of 100 debt-stricken individuals in the first three months of 2026, disbursing AED 700,000 through a programme that targets those facing court-ordered enforcement actions.

Sharjah Charity International’s “Relief of Distress” initiative channels donor funds toward settling the accumulated debts of individuals who have exhausted their ability to repay, many of whom are either imprisoned or at risk of incarceration due to outstanding financial obligations.

“All cases were verified as eligible and subject to court rulings. Some are currently serving sentences, while others were at risk of imprisonment,” said Abdullah Sultan bin Khadim, Executive Director of Sharjah Charity International.

The association works directly with correctional and rehabilitation institutions across the UAE to identify potential beneficiaries, conducting social assessments to determine the severity of each case before the Aid Committee approves assistance. Beyond debt settlement, the programme also covers housing obligations and essential living costs for qualifying individuals.

Bin Khadim noted that the initiative draws consistent support from donors, citing its direct impact on family welfare — particularly in cases where a household’s primary earner has been detained. Families of those currently serving sentences also receive ongoing assistance in the form of food supplies and other basic necessities.

The executive director credited cooperating authorities for referring financially distressed cases to the organisation, which he said runs the programme throughout the year as part of broader efforts to reinforce social cohesion and ease economic strain within the community.
