The Department of Migrant Workers has raised the alarm over a pattern of theft incidents aboard commercial flights, urging overseas Filipino workers to stay vigilant throughout their journeys.
According to the agency, some passengers have been exploiting moments when fellow travelers leave their belongings unattended. The schemes involve deliberate distraction, staged offers of assistance, and swift sleight-of-hand maneuvers aimed at taking valuables such as cash, credit cards, and travel pouches.
The DMW identified five documented methods used by in-flight thieves: intentionally dropping food or drinks near a target to cause a disturbance; feigning the need for help or directions as a pretext to redirect a passenger’s attention; deliberately crowding or bumping into someone to access their belongings; pretending to assist with overhead bin baggage as a cover for theft; and rushing off the aircraft at arrival to escape with stolen items.
To counter these risks, the department is advising OFWs to keep important documents, money, and gadgets within reach at all times, use bags with locks worn at the front of the body, and avoid placing passports or valuables in seat pockets or compartments accessible to others nearby.
Travelers who notice suspicious behavior are urged to report it immediately to the cabin crew or airport authorities rather than confront individuals directly.
