Philippines among top 10 countries that watch anime the most

The Philippines has emerged as a significant hub for anime enthusiasts, securing the third spot in global anime viewership for 2023, World Popular Review study shows. The data reveals that an impressive 70.58% of Filipinos engage with anime regularly, showcasing the widespread appeal of the Japanese animation style within the country.

Following Japan, where about 75.87% of the population watches anime, and the United States with 71.86%, the Philippines’ robust viewership numbers indicate a deep-rooted fondness for the genre. Despite Japan having the highest percentage of its population watching anime, the Philippines’ figures are indicative of the genre’s expansive reach across different cultures and regions.

Anime, characterized by its vibrant art, fantastical themes, and vibrant characters, has become a global phenomenon, transcending its Japanese origins. The study suggests that the rise in internet usage has played a pivotal role in anime’s popularity, as more fans stream content online, moving away from traditional TV viewership metrics.

The report also touched on the influence of well-known shows like “Pokemon” and “Yu-Gi-Oh” in popularizing anime outside Japan. Additionally, the acclaim of Studio Ghibli, often dubbed the Disney of anime, is noted for its contribution to the genre’s international success with hits like “Spirited Away” and “My Neighbor Totoro.”
