OFW who fled Middle East conflict gets chance to teach in the Philippines

An overseas Filipino worker who returned home amid the ongoing Middle East conflict is being guided toward a teaching career in the Philippines, with multiple government agencies coordinating her reintegration.

The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration confirmed that “Remy Rose” was among more than 300 OFWs repatriated from the Middle East in a recent batch. Her case drew early attention after her family approached the office of Manila Mayor Isko Moreno seeking assistance with her return, prompting the local government to connect directly with OWWA.

OWWA Administrator Patricia Yvonne Caunan accompanied Remy Rose to Manila City Hall, where both acknowledged the support extended by Mayor Moreno and Vice Mayor Chi Atienza in facilitating the repatriation.

With her education degree identified during the reintegration process, OWWA said its Regional Welfare Office-NCR — led by Regional Director Ma. Teresa Capa — will provide guidance as she prepares for the Licensure Examination for Teachers.

“Bilang bahagi ng reintegration support, napag-alaman na si Remy Rose ay nagtapos ng kursong edukasyon. Dahil dito, agad siyang tutulungan ng OWWA Regional Welfare Office-NCR sa pangunguna ni Regional Director Ma. Teresa Capa sa pamamagitan ng pagbibigay ng gabay at assistance upang makapagpatuloy siya sa paghahanda para sa Licensure Examination for Teachers,” the agency said in a statement.

Her case aligns with an existing reintegration pathway called Sa Pinas, Ikaw ang Ma’am at Sir, or SPIMS — a joint program of the Department of Education and the Department of Migrant Workers, under which OWWA operates. Qualified returnees may apply for permanent Teacher I positions, provided they meet the program’s qualification standards and hiring guidelines.

DepEd Secretary Sonny Angara has previously signaled the department’s readiness to absorb Filipino teachers working abroad, including those displaced by the current Middle East conflict, noting that a structured reintegration program is already in place for those who wish to return to teaching Filipino youth.
