A video from a 2022 presidential debate is drawing renewed interest online, with many Filipinos pointing to it as an early warning that went unheeded.
The clip, originally aired during a CNN Philippines debate, features then-Vice President Leni Robredo laying out a set of economic proposals centered on fuel and energy — issues that have since become central concerns for millions of households.
“Unang-una yung supply ng oil, siguradong maaapektuhan tayo nito. Dapat meron tayong fuel subsidy, kailangan ang automatic suspension ng excise tax, kasi ang mababawas sa presyo mga Php 10 per liter, yung implementation ng VAT kailangan tingnan natin,” Robredo said in the clip.
Pump prices in the country have climbed to near the ₱90–₱100 per liter range, while the country’s inflation rate stood at 2.4 percent as of February 2026. The cost of staples including rice and cooking oil has also risen, adding pressure on lower-income households already stretched thin.
During the same debate, Robredo had also raised the prospect of power shortages compounding the country’s energy woes, calling for early action rather than reactive measures.
“Kailangan ng presidente, yung foresight at vigilance… para naaanticipate niya ang mga darating na problema,” she said.
The resurfacing of the footage has prompted widespread commentary online, with many users framing it as a missed opportunity. Robredo lost the May 2022 presidential election to Ferdinand Marcos Jr. in a landslide.
The former vice president, who currently serves as mayor of Naga City, had also proposed targeted subsidies for vulnerable sectors during the campaign period — a measure advocates have continued to push for as living costs remain elevated.
