Emirates, the leading international airline, has revealed plans for a new engineering facility in Dubai, with an investment of US$950 million. The facility, to be built at Dubai World Central (DWC), will be the largest and most advanced of its kind, operated by any airline.
The complex, covering 1 million square metres, will bolster Dubai’s aviation infrastructure and is designed to support Emirates’ aircraft fleet well into the 2040s. It will also serve as a hub for commercial aviation engineering services in the Middle East, potentially catering to other airline operators.
HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman and CEO of Emirates airline and Group, emphasized the facility’s role in ensuring operational stability, flexibility, and quality assurance for Emirates’ maintenance and engineering needs. He highlighted its significance in the growth of the regional aviation sector and its contribution to Dubai’s economy through job creation and involvement of global aviation stakeholders.
The new facility will offer comprehensive aircraft engineering services, including routine checks, paint jobs, maintenance programmes, engine repair and testing, cabin interior fit-outs, and aircraft conversions.
Ali Mubarak Al Soori, Executive Vice President of Emirates Group, noted that Phase 1 of construction is set to start in 2024 and finish by 2027, with provisions for future expansion. The complex will incorporate sustainable practices, such as green building materials, solar panels, and recycling systems for oils and wastewater.
The project will initially include 8 maintenance hangars, 1 paint hangar, engine facilities, workshops, storage areas, and administrative offices. The existing Emirates Engineering Centre at Dubai International (DXB) will remain operational, with the new complex at DWC handling extensive maintenance work.
ADP Ingénierie has been appointed as the project consultant for this ambitious undertaking.
