Jeepney fare goes up by P1 to P2 starting Thursday, says acting LTFRB chief

Acting Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez announced Tuesday that commuters riding traditional jeepneys will pay P1.00 more per trip, while passengers of modern jeepneys face a P2.00 increase, with both adjustments taking effect Thursday.

Lopez disclosed the fare adjustments in an interview on Unang Balita, confirming that the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board had approved the hikes the night before. Provincial buses, metro buses, point-to-point routes, and airport taxis are covered by the same approval.

Under the new structure, the base fare for traditional jeepneys rises from P13.00 to P14.00 for the first four kilometers. Lopez noted that a conditional increase previously in place has been made permanent, with an additional peso layered on top.

“Pagdating sa ating mga jeepney, ngayon po ang traditional jeepney natin ang pamasahe natin is P13.00. May conditional increase pong kasama yan, yan ay ginawa na natin permanent at nagdagdag pa tayo ng P1.00. So, P14.00 na po sa first four kilometers. That’s for the traditional jeepney,” Lopez said.

To illustrate the practical impact on riders, Lopez cited a commonly traveled route.

“Kung bibigyan natin to ng example, tulad ng Cubao-Divisoria, that’s 10 kilometers po no ang tingin namin, ang pamasahe diyan is P23.00, ngayon dahil sa dagdag singil, that will be P25.00,” he added.

The adjustments are tied to the sustained rise in global fuel costs driven by the ongoing Middle East conflict. Lopez confirmed the approval covered multiple transport categories in a single action.

“Inaprubahan na po natin kagabi ang pagtaas ng pamasahe pagdating sa mga provincial buses, metro buses, P2P, kasama din po ang jeepneys, at airport taxis,” he said.

Separately, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has directed the immediate release of P5,000 in cash assistance to public utility vehicle drivers to help absorb the impact of elevated pump prices.
