As regional tensions escalated following aerial threats targeting the UAE, the country’s top leadership made an unannounced visit to one of its busiest public spaces.
UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum were seen on Monday evening walking through Dubai Mall, drawing attention from shoppers and restaurant-goers inside the sprawling retail complex.
The visit took place hours after the UAE’s air defence systems intercepted multiple drones and other aerial threats launched from Iran, during a period of heightened strain in the region. The leaders’ presence in a crowded public venue was widely interpreted as a visible demonstration of confidence in the country’s security environment.
Footage circulating online showed members of the public approaching the two leaders, with several stopping to exchange greetings and brief conversations. In one widely shared clip, a Ghanaian expatriate shook hands with both leaders and asked about their well-being.
During the exchange, Sheikh Mohamed asked the man whether he was happy. The man, smiling broadly, replied, “yes, yes.” The President then wished him an enjoyable stay in the UAE and encouraged him to make the most of his time in the country.
The two leaders were also seen seated at one of the mall’s restaurants, where they continued interacting informally with visitors. A number of sheikhs and senior officials accompanied them throughout the evening.
