Rape cases recorded one of the sharpest monthly declines among tracked offenses in January, falling by more than 22 percent to 400 incidents from 516 the previous month, according to figures released Thursday by the Philippine National Police.
The drop was part of a broader nationwide trend. Total focus crimes tallied by the PNP reached 2,581 in January, roughly four percent fewer than the 2,681 logged in December. Murder fell from 319 to 284 cases, physical injury dropped by nearly 30 percent from 427 to 299, and motorcycle theft edged down from 162 to 149.
PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez pointed to coordinated community engagement as the driving force behind the results. “These numbers show that criminality is now lower and more cases are solved. This means that our strategy – strengthened operations and coordination with communities – is working,” he said.
Nartatez also noted that cleared cases carry weight beyond statistics, saying solved crimes provide closure to victims and their families while reinforcing public safety.
The PNP’s crime resolution efficiency for the month stood at 70.24 percent.
At the local level, Quezon City saw a steeper decline than the national average, with focus crimes falling 14.19 percent — from 155 in December to 133 in January. Physical injury cases there were cut in half, dropping from 18 to nine, while motorcycle theft fell from 21 to 13, a reduction of more than 38 percent.
Quezon City Police District director Brig. Gen. Randy Glenn Silvio credited targeted operations in high-risk areas for the improvement. “We will continue to strengthen the programs to improve peace and order in Quezon City,” he said.
