Vice President Sara Duterte has formally entered the 2028 presidential race, positioning herself as the earliest declared contender in the upcoming national elections and setting off renewed political calculations across rival camps.
In a speech delivered on February 18, Duterte described her decision as a personal commitment to dedicate her “life, strength and future” to the country. She cited widespread concerns over corruption, rising prices of basic goods, and weaknesses in the healthcare system as issues she intends to confront should she win the presidency. During the same address, she also expressed regret over her support for President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. in the 2022 polls, signaling a definitive break from an alliance that has since unraveled publicly.
Her announcement arrives amid escalating tensions between her camp and the Marcos administration. The Vice President has been the subject of several impeachment complaints and criminal allegations, including accusations linked to the alleged misuse of public funds. Previous impeachment attempts did not prosper due to procedural barriers, but renewed efforts have been initiated. While these cases remain pending, they could carry implications for her candidacy if they advance and result in disqualification.
Despite the legal challenges, Duterte continues to be regarded as a strong political force, backed by a loyal support base and the enduring influence of her family name in national politics. The Marcos administration, for its part, has dismissed suggestions that her early campaign declaration is connected to her legal troubles and has not issued a direct rebuttal to her criticisms.
Within the Duterte camp, discussions about possible running mates have already begun to surface. Speaking on the One PH program #SaTotooLang, former Presidential Anti-Corruption Commission chairperson Greco Belgica said several names are being considered as potential partners for Duterte in 2028.
Belgica identified Senators Bong Go, Robin Padilla, and Rodante Marcoleta as figures he believes could complement the Vice President’s candidacy. He also mentioned Senator Imee Marcos, while acknowledging that some sectors remain uneasy about reviving a Duterte-Marcos alignment.
“Kahit si Sen. Imee Marcos. Although mayroong mga grupo na medyo nagre-repel sa Duterte-Marcos,” Belgica said.
He further raised the possibility of an unexpected alliance involving former Vice President and Naga City Mayor Leni Robredo.
“Kahit si Leni will be a good tandem for Sara… Alam mo kasi, unity. Kailangang magkaisa na ang bansa,” he added.
