UAE court orders man to pay AED40,000 for social media threats and stalking

A court in Al Ain has ordered a man to pay AED40,000 in compensation to a woman after he was found to have threatened, insulted, and defamed her on social media, while also stalking her and endangering her safety in public.

According to Gulf Today, the Al Ain Civil, Commercial and Administrative Cases Court ruled that the woman suffered psychological, moral, and material harm due to the man’s repeated actions, including following her on the road and at her workplace and blocking her path in a reckless manner that nearly put her life at risk.

Court records showed that the woman had filed a civil lawsuit demanding AED40,000 in damages, arguing that the harassment caused her severe emotional distress and financial loss, including damage to her vehicle.

She also asked the court to impose a legal interest rate of nine per cent from the date the case was filed until full payment is made, in addition to court fees and expenses.

In her complaint, the woman said the man not only threatened and insulted her online but also repeatedly pursued her in real life, obstructed her movements dangerously, and vandalized her car.

The incidents had already been tackled in a previous criminal case, where the man was convicted for threatening and insulting the woman through social media, committing actions that endangered lives, and damaging her vehicle.

The criminal court had imposed a fine of AED50,000, a ruling which was later upheld by the Court of Appeal.

In its civil judgment, the court noted that the woman’s fear, anxiety, and distress, along with the damage to her vehicle, were directly linked to the defendant’s proven actions as established by the earlier criminal conviction.
