Filipina helper in Hong Kong placed under care after employer caught on video hurting her

A Filipino domestic worker in Hong Kong is now under government care after a video circulated online showing her being physically harmed by her employer, prompting immediate police intervention and assistance from Philippine labor officials.

Authorities confirmed that officers responded after the footage spread, in which the employer was seen pulling the worker by the hair. Police were able to locate and speak with the victim shortly after the incident was reported.

The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) withheld the worker’s identity, but Hong Kong Labor Attaché Cesar Chavez disclosed that she is from Bulacan. Following the incident, the worker was taken to a hospital for medical attention and has since been discharged.

She is currently staying at a temporary shelter managed by the Migrant Workers Office in Hong Kong while receiving support services. OWWA Administrator Patricia Yvonne Caunan said initial information suggests the alleged abuser may be a ward of the household who has a mental health condition.

Hong Kong police have opened a formal investigation, and a lawyer has been assigned to assist the worker should she decide to pursue legal action against her employer.

OWWA officials said they will also consult the worker on whether she prefers to return to the Philippines or seek continued employment in Hong Kong.
