As preparations continue for a week of basketball activities in Doha this February, Champions Class for Coaches has confirmed another high-profile name joining its instructional lineup, bringing one of Philippine basketball’s most enduring figures to the Middle East coaching scene. The one-day clinic is scheduled for February 5, 2026, and is open exclusively to coaches seeking advanced, experience-based instruction.
The session will be led by Johnny Abarrientos, whose influence on the game extends from a celebrated playing career to decades of work on the sidelines. Now an assistant coach with Barangay Ginebra San Miguel in the PBA, Abarrientos continues to shape teams at the highest professional level.
Organizers described the Doha clinic as an opportunity for coaches to learn directly from a figure whose career helped define an era of Philippine basketball. Discussions will center on guard play fundamentals, decision-making, leadership on and off the court, and building a sustainable winning culture—areas closely associated with Abarrientos’ legacy as a floor general and mentor.
Abarrientos first rose to prominence after being selected third overall in the 1993 PBA Draft, quickly becoming the cornerstone of the Alaska franchise. Known as “The Flying A,” he earned league Most Valuable Player honors in 1996 and was a central figure in Alaska’s historic Grand Slam that same year. Over the course of his playing career, he collected 12 PBA championships and established himself as one of the league’s most respected defenders and playmakers, finishing among the all-time leaders in steals before his jersey was retired by Alaska.
His transition into coaching followed shortly after retirement, beginning a long tenure with the Purefoods/B-Meg/Magnolia franchise as part of Tim Cone’s staff. During nearly two decades with the team, Abarrientos contributed to multiple title runs, including another Grand Slam achieved from the bench. His coaching résumé also includes service with Far Eastern University, his alma mater, and his more recent role with Barangay Ginebra San Miguel.
The Champions Class clinic featuring Abarrientos will take place in Doha, Qatar, with organizers confirming that participation is limited and registration is being handled through the event’s official contact channels.
