What began as a routine workday for a Filipina healthcare worker in Northern California ended in tragedy after a traffic incident outside the Sacramento VA Medical Center.
Authorities confirmed that Novyrose Mejia, a nurse employed at the facility, was struck by a vehicle on December 13, 2025. The collision caused her to fall to the ground, where she sustained a serious head injury, according to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office.
Emergency personnel rushed Mejia to the VA Medical Center’s emergency department before she was transferred to UC Davis Medical Center for advanced care. Despite intervention and efforts by medical teams, including her colleagues, she died three days later due to complications from severe head trauma.
Mejia is survived by her husband and two sons. She was originally from the Philippines and completed her studies at the University of Baguio before relocating to the United States to pursue her nursing career.
Family members described her, through an online fundraising page, as a deeply faithful and compassionate individual whose life centered on service. They said she was a practicing Catholic who approached nursing as a calling, consistently prioritizing patient care, comfort, and advocacy over personal needs.
The same fundraising appeal noted that the family is now dealing with significant financial strain related to medical treatment and funeral arrangements, prompting members of the community to offer support.
The crash remains under investigation by the Rancho Cordova Police Department and the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office. As of the latest update from authorities, no criminal charges have been announced.
