Vice President Sara Duterte used the start of Overseas Filipinos Month this December to spotlight the experiences of millions of Filipinos working abroad, calling them central to the country’s progress and global identity.
In a message released through her Facebook page on Saturday, December 6, Duterte spoke of overseas workers as individuals who move across continents and build careers far from home while continuing to uplift the Philippine economy. She stressed that the challenges they face — separation from loved ones, cultural adjustments, and the emotional toll of distance — demand recognition and deeper national support.
“Hindi madali ang inyong pinagdadaanan—malayo sa pamilya, magkaibang kultura, at pangungulila—ngunit patuloy kayong nagsisikap, at nagpapakita ng katatagan at karangalan,” she said, describing their resilience as a source of pride.
She added, “You are the heartbeat of the global Filipino pride, showcasing Filipino talent and values worldwide.”
Her message also served as a call to action for government agencies and community groups to enhance services and protections available to overseas workers. Duterte emphasized the need for improved assistance across key areas such as embassies, mental health access, and reintegration efforts for those returning home.
“As we honor your contributions, I call on our government and communities to strengthen support systems—better consular services, mental health resources, and reintegration programs—to ensure your rights are protected and your sacrifices are recognized,” she said.
She noted that families in the Philippines also carry their own share of sacrifice as they support and wait for relatives working abroad. “Para naman sa mga pamilyang naiwan, kayo ang sandigan ng pagmamahal at lakas. Ang inyong sariling sakripisyo at katatagan ang pinagmumulan ng inspirasyon at tapang ng bawat Overseas Filipino Worker,” she said.
Duterte appealed to the public to help create an environment in which overseas workers can return home fulfilled and respected. “Sama-sama tayong bumuo ng kinabukasan kung saan bawat OFW ay makakabalik nang may dangal at ganap na matutupad ang kanilang mga pangarap,” she said.
“Mabuhay ang mga OFW at lahat ng Pilipino sa buong mundo!”
