Young hoopers in Dubai finish 1st runner-up at Asia Pacific Cup in Singapore after undefeated streak

GRIND Basketball Dubai’s 2013 Team has delivered another proud moment for the Filipino community in the UAE, finishing as 1st Runner-Up at the 13th Asia Pacific Cup – U12 Division in Singapore, held October 22 to 26, 2025.

Carrying both the UAE and Philippine flags, the young squad marched through the tournament undefeated from Wednesday to Saturday, showcasing grit, chemistry, and sharp court instincts. Their winning streak led them to the championship game against Pilipinas Microsmith, the reigning three-time champions. In a high-intensity battle, GRIND fell short in the final showdown but finished with heads high and hearts full, earning recognition as one of the most disciplined and promising youth teams in the region.

“This milestone reflects the players’ discipline, teamwork, and love for the game, along with the dedication of their coaches who continue to guide young athletes in the Filipino community here in the UAE,” the team said in a statement to TGFM.

Preparing champions on and off the court

Behind the team’s spirited performance was a training system grounded in routine, resilience, and respect. According to Coach John Kelly Montilla, the preparation was not merely physical.

“We focused on a combination of rigorous training, mental conditioning, and building confidence,” he shared with TGFM. “Physically, they followed a structured training schedule that emphasized skill development, endurance, and teamwork exercises. We also had sessions to simulate game situations, which helped them stay calm and composed during high-stakes moments.”

His approach echoed a philosophy beyond trophies: shape strong players, shape even stronger character.

A defining moment in the tournament

With five straight wins locked in, the path to the finals felt like a storybook run. But Montilla made sure the team stayed grounded, especially with a powerhouse opponent standing in the way.

“When the boys played with such determination and teamwork to remain undefeated and qualify for the championship match,” he said, recalling the highlight of the week. “But I also reminded them that the most challenging part was facing the 3-peat champion Microsmith. That matchup really tested their skills and mindset, and it was a great learning experience for everyone involved.”

For GRIND, success wasn’t just measured in medals, but in how their young athletes responded to pressure and learned from it.

Balancing discipline and joy

Youth sports can be a tightrope walk between discipline and fun. For this team, both were equally important.

“We set clear expectations for discipline in practice and games, while encouraging them to have fun and enjoy the process of learning and competing,” Montilla explained. “I promote teamwork by fostering open communication, trust, and collaboration, making sure everyone feels valued and supported.”

A message to young Filipino athletes in the UAE

With pride in the boys who fought with heart and humility, Montilla had a message for Filipino youth dreaming to follow their path:

“Believe in yourself and stay dedicated. Hard work, discipline, and a positive mindset are key to reaching your goals. Remember, every challenge is an opportunity to grow, and teamwork is the foundation of success. Keep pushing, stay humble, and enjoy the journey—because with passion and perseverance, you can achieve great things like this team did. Your dreams are within reach!”
