Local authorities in Bohol have opened an urgent investigation after a diver reported a vandalized coral formation off Panglao Island, one of the country’s top marine tourism sites.
The diver discovered the coral, etched with the words “Just Dive,” at Napaling Point in Barangay Tangnan early Friday and immediately shared photos and video with provincial officials. The footage was forwarded to Gov. Erico Aristotle Aumentado, who quickly ordered a response.
Aumentado condemned the incident, calling it “deeply distressing” and stressing that damaging marine life not only harms the environment but threatens the province’s tourism industry. “It’s disheartening that some people seem to take pleasure in destroying our natural resources or sabotaging our tourism,” he said.
The governor directed the Panglao municipal government and environmental agencies, including the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and the Bohol Environment Management Office, to identify those responsible and hold them accountable.
The latest case adds to a string of reef disturbances in the area. Coral graffiti discovered near Virgin Island in 2024 led to the closure of the Estaca snorkeling site, while reef rangers earlier this year flagged coral damage at Napaling caused by divers stepping on live corals.
Officials reiterated that Bohol remains committed to protecting its marine ecosystems as it continues to welcome divers and tourists from around the world.
