E-Scooter accidents in Dubai: 5 dead, 29 injured in 8 months

In the last eight months, e-scooter accidents in Dubai have claimed the lives of five individuals and left 29 others injured. Police reports revealed that these accidents stemmed from the “improper use” of e-scooters, resulting in 32 accidents in total. Out of the 29 injured, two sustained severe injuries, while 14 suffered moderate ones.

Major-General Saif Muhair Al Mazroui, the director of the traffic department, highlighted that over 10,000 fines were levied on e-scooter riders during this period. Riders are fined Dh300 if they engage in actions that risk their safety or that of others. Some recorded violations include children under 16 operating e-scooters, riding on main roads, and moving against traffic.

Major-General Al Mazroui emphasized the importance of adhering to safety guidelines for e-scooter users. He advised riders to obey traffic laws, use designated paths, avoid roads where speeds surpass 60kmph, and ensure they wear protective gear. This includes helmets, reflective jackets, and equipping their scooters with white and red reflective lights at the front and back, respectively. He also stressed the necessity of having functioning brakes on the vehicles.
