Praying and resting top Filipinos’ ways to manage stress, SWS survey finds

Praying and resting are the leading ways Filipinos cope with stress, according to a recent nationwide survey by the Social Weather Stations (SWS).

The survey, conducted in late September among 1,500 adult respondents, found that 16 percent of Filipinos turn to prayer or spiritual activities when dealing with stress — the highest among all coping methods.

Resting or sleeping came next at 14 percent, followed by going out or taking leisure trips (11 percent) and maintaining a positive mindset (7 percent).

SWS also observed a gender difference in coping strategies: women were more likely to rely on prayer at 20 percent, compared to 14 percent among men.

By region, praying ranked as the top stress reliever in Metro Manila and Balance Luzon, while resting or sleeping was most common in the Visayas and Mindanao.
