MUSCAT, Oman. In a profound expression of unity, compassion, and advocacy, the Philippine Nurses Association of Oman (PNAO) and the Filipino Medical and Health Alliances in Oman (FMHAO) proudly join the global commemoration of World Mental Health Day with an event that goes beyond awareness, it fosters healing.
Entitled “The Strength of Self-Care: A Mental Health and Resilience Workshop for Overseas Filipino Healthcare Professionals,” the in-person workshop will take place on Friday, October 31, 2025, 4:00 p.m. at La Rosa Hotel, Al Khuwair, Muscat.
Tailored for Filipino healthcare professionals, the event is a timely response to the growing mental health challenges faced by Filipinos working abroad, a group known for their dedication, yet often burdened by the invisible weight of emotional labor, separation, and cultural transition.
“We cannot pour from an empty cup. Caring for ourselves is not self-indulgence; it is a professional responsibility and a gift we give to our families, patients, and communities.” –FMHAO Leadership
Why This Event Matters
As a nurse educator, I have seen the quiet exhaustion behind the smiles of our modern heroes abroad. For many Filipino healthcare professionals, mental health struggles often remain unspoken. Long work hours, high patient loads, cultural barriers, and the absence of family support combine to create a perfect storm of burnout.
The World Health Organization (WHO) defines mental health as a state of well-being that allows individuals to realize their abilities and cope with life’s stresses. But for many OFWs, simply coping has replaced thriving. This is why PNAO and FMHAO’s initiative is not just relevant, it’s essential.
The workshop moves beyond lectures and jargon. It offers practical, evidence-informed tools to help participants understand themselves, manage stress, and rebuild emotional resilience. The design integrates principles of Orem’s Self-Care Theory, Bandura’s Self-Efficacy, and Ryff’sPsychological Well-Being Model, transformed into relatable, Filipino-centered strategies.
Two Transformative Sessions
1. The OFW Mindset: Confronting Stress and Burnout, Reclaiming Mental Balance
This first session explores the inner world of migrant healthcare workers, their challenges, sacrifices, and quiet triumphs. It will guide participants in:
– Mindful breathing and stress-reset routines between duties
– Setting emotional and professional boundaries
– Reframing negative thoughts through cognitive techniques
– Reestablishing healthy sleep cycles amidst shifting schedules
– Strengthening family connections despite distance and time zones
2. Enhancing Professional Self-Efficacy and Psychological Well-Being: Building Resilience Among Filipino Professionals Abroad
This module focuses on the link between confidence, competence, and wellness. Participants will learn:
– Strategies to build professional self-efficacy through mentorship and feedback
– Habits that reinforce psychological well-being like gratitude, reflection, and purpose alignment
– Creation of a personal resilience toolkit, including a 30-day self-care action plan
– Ways to cultivate a supportive professional community that fosters accountability and empathy
“Bayanihan is also emotional. When we breathe together, learn together, and look out for one another, we build a culture where Filipinos don’t just survive abroad, we thrive.” – PNAO Leadership
A Community Duty to Care for the Carers
Filipino healthcare professionals are pillars of compassion across the world, in hospitals, clinics, and care facilities. Yet, they often neglect their own mental wellness while caring for others. This workshop acknowledges that paradox and bridges the gap between caring and being cared for.
It stands on three fundamental convictions:
1. Wellness ensures safety and quality care. Healthy caregivers deliver better care and fewer errors.
2. Resilience is shared. Empowered individuals build supportive, humane workplaces.
3. Culture heals. Filipino values, faith, humor, and bayanihan are powerful psychological resources that must be celebrated and sustained.
