Amid massive relief operations for victims of the 6.9-magnitude earthquake that struck Cebu on September 30, a story of quiet generosity has gone viral online.
A Facebook post by digital content creator Jennivieve Abelgas Caminero on October 2 featured an elderly man in a yellow shirt, face mask, and carrying a sack bag who approached their group to give his donation.
According to Caminero, the man pulled out PHP19 from his pocket and insisted on giving it despite his humble appearance. “Lumapit si Tatay, may dalang sako, ang damit niya ay madumi na talaga. Dumukot sa bulsa, at iniabot ang PHP19 pesos. Ang kanyang tulong ay mula raw sa puso,” she wrote.
Volunteers were moved to tears as the man explained that he planned to return the following week with collected T-shirts to donate as well. Caminero’s post ended with, “GOD BLESS YOUR HEART TATAY!”
The story sparked an outpouring of admiration from netizens. Some called his gift “the greatest” because it was all he had. One commenter noted, “That wasn’t just 19 pesos—it was a reminder that even the smallest gift can carry the greatest love and hope.” Another said, “People like tatay… they have less in life but they give more.”
Caminero later confirmed, “We found tatay!” and shared that she had been receiving messages from people who wanted to help the man. She is now coordinating with his family for further details.
