Carla Abellana opens up on why she speaks out on public issues

Kapuso actress Carla Abellana said she feels both amused and flattered after netizens tagged her as the internet’s “Patron Saint for Concerned Citizens.”

In an interview on Fast Talk with Boy Abunda on Thursday, Abellana shared her thoughts on the unusual title. “Paano nila naiisip or how do they come up with such titles? Pero I guess in a way medyo flattered kasi nabibigyan po ng title, ng pansin in a way, so for me parang laughing matter siya,” she said.

Abellana has gained attention for openly expressing her frustrations on social media, calling out government shortcomings and service-related issues that directly affect her. “Ako po as long as I’m affected by it or it hits me personally… that’s when lumalabas po kasi talaga ’yung frustration, galit, ’yung helplessness,” she explained.

She admitted that speaking up did not come naturally at first, but her experiences eventually pushed her to use her platform. “Quiet lang po ako, hindi po ako ’yung nangingialam or what. Kaya siguro ’yung frustration na rin Tito Boy… I feel like it’s about time I used my voice, enough na po ’yung pagiging tahimik,” she said.

However, Abellana acknowledged the downside of being outspoken online. She receives negative comments, and some people bring up her past relationships. “It’s part of the risk that you take na talagang hindi po lahat mag-a-agree with you… ultimo ’yung mga wala na pong kinalaman from the past, hinahalungkat po nila,” she noted. Despite this, she stressed she is prepared to face such criticism. “Honestly, to me it’s nothing… ready po ako just in case,” she added.

Abellana currently stars in the film Selda Tres alongside JM De Guzman and Cesar Montano. Earlier this year, she also appeared in Widows’ War and launched her own handmade goods brand, Artisana.
