Drag artist Pura Luka Vega expressed nothing but gratitude after the Quezon City Regional Trial Court (RTC) dismissed the remaining criminal cases filed against them over their controversial “Ama Namin” performance.
In a ruling dated September 19, the Quezon City RTC Branch 306 granted Pura’s demurrer to evidence, declaring the prosecution’s case insufficient. Presiding Judge Dolly Rose R. Bolante-Prado ordered the dismissal of three counts of violating Article 201 of the Revised Penal Code in relation to the Cybercrime Prevention Act.
The cases stemmed from Pura’s 2023 performance where they portrayed a festive image of Christ while dancing to an upbeat version of the Catholic prayer. Religious groups argued this violated decency laws, but the court found no strong basis to proceed.
Rainbow Rights Philippines, the NGO Pura is part of, welcomed the development, saying: “With this ruling, all cases against them have been ordered DISMISSED. We hope that this latest ruling will eventually gain finality.”
On their X page, Pura shared the news with a brief but heartfelt post: “Prayers answered. Thank you Lord!”
This marks the second victory for the artist in recent months. Last June, the Manila RTC Branch 184 also acquitted them of similar charges under the same law.
