OFW Hospital doctors make history with first successful lung test and biopsy

The OFW Hospital in San Fernando, Pampanga has achieved a major medical milestone with its first-ever successful Fiberoptic Bronchoscopy with Bronchoalveolar Lavage and Bronchial Mass Biopsy, a breakthrough that strengthens its role as the country’s dedicated healthcare facility for overseas Filipino workers and their families.

The complex procedure was spearheaded by Dr. Patrick Louie C. Maglaya with Dr. Annalyn Go Adlawan, in close coordination with the hospital’s Operating Room Department and Respiratory Therapy Unit.

A bronchoscopy involves inserting a thin, flexible tube with a camera into the lungs, giving doctors a clearer view of the airways. Through bronchoalveolar lavage, fluid is introduced and retrieved from a small section of the lung to detect infections or inflammation. The biopsy of a bronchial mass allows doctors to take tissue samples from an abnormal growth for accurate diagnosis.

Hospital officials stressed that this achievement is not just a technical success but a step forward in providing more specialized, life-saving care to patients. The capability to perform such advanced diagnostic procedures means earlier detection of serious conditions such as lung infections, chronic diseases, or even cancer, ensuring patients get timely and targeted treatment.
