Police vow legal action after rally over flood control projects injures 8

The Quezon City Police District (QCPD) announced it will pursue legal action against militant groups that held a protest outside the Batasang Pambansa on Friday morning, where eight police officers were reported injured.

In a statement released that evening, the QCPD said, “appropriate legal actions shall be pursued to establish accountability” as an investigation is already ongoing.

The rally, led by Bayan Muna, Kabataan, and Gabriela, called for accountability over alleged irregularities in flood control projects, which have recently dragged the names of several lawmakers. According to dzBB reporter Isa Avendaño Umali, demonstrators hurled mud and paint at officers stationed at the south gate of the Batasan complex, where the House of Representatives was simultaneously conducting its Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) budget hearing.

Police said around 300 individuals joined the protest, which they noted had no permit and caused traffic disruption.

“In fulfillment of its mandate to maintain peace and order, the QCPD deployed personnel who managed the situation with maximum tolerance. Despite this, some protesters became aggressive, resulting in injuries to eight police officers who were lawfully performing their official duties,” the statement added.
