Torre downplays removal as PNP chief: ‘Wala akong sama ng loob’

Police Gen. Nicolas Torre III has accepted Malacañang’s decision to remove him as chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP) less than three months into his term, stressing that he has no ill feelings over the move.

“Wala akong sama ng loob. I’m a good soldier. Kung may order, I just follow it,” Torre said in an interview reported by ABS-CBN News’ Vivienne Gulla.

The former Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) chief, who turns 56 in March—the PNP’s mandatory retirement age—said this is not the first time he has faced setbacks in his 30-year career. “Look at me straight to the eye. Do I look like somebody who is bitter? Kung kamusta ako? Okay,” he added, underscoring his resolve to move forward.

Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla earlier said President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. wanted to reinforce the authority of the National Police Commission (Napolcom), which was among the reasons Torre was relieved. Remulla noted that he had tried to personally inform Torre, but his calls went unanswered. Torre explained this was due to poor connectivity at the time, saying, “Napakabagal talaga ng internet… It’s just so unfortunate na paka-bad timing nung mga calls niya.”

Asked about reports of a possible new appointment, Torre declined to confirm but emphasized that he is not qualified to head the National Bureau of Investigation, as its top post requires at least 15 years of law practice. On whether he has spoken directly with President Marcos Jr., Torre invoked “executive privilege” but maintained his support for the chief executive.

He expressed confidence in his successor, PNP Chief Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr., whom he described as a “very good officer.” Torre has filed for leave while awaiting action from the new leadership but remains a member of the police force.

When asked if he would retire early, Torre said he is still reflecting on the matter. “I’m still composing my thoughts and I’ll be making a statement in due time,” he remarked.

Torre was also spotted visiting Mamamayang Liberal Party-List Rep. Leila de Lima on her birthday, clarifying that their meeting was purely a personal gesture and not tied to political plans. “Kung plans, unang-una wala akong pera na para sa trabahong ‘yan. Naku po. Diyos ko. I’m really so far from reality,” he said.
