Leila de Lima slams sudden removal of PNP Chief Torre, asks: ‘Where’s the good reason?’

Former senator and now Mamamayang Liberal Party-List Representative Leila de Lima raised concerns over the sudden relief of Police General Nicolas Torre III as Chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP), questioning why a widely regarded “high-performing” official was removed without clear explanation.

De Lima, who has returned to public service after years of political and legal battles, described Torre as “a very popular, much appreciated and high-performing PNP Chief,” stressing that the Palace should have a “good reason” for cutting his term short.

The announcement of Torre’s relief came on August 25, 2025, following an order signed by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin on behalf of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. The decision immediately took effect, leaving many in political and law enforcement circles surprised at the timing and manner of the move.

DILG clarifies no wrongdoing

Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla was quick to clarify that Torre had not committed any violation of law or administrative infraction.

“He did not violate any laws. It is simply a choice of the President to take a new direction for the PNP,” Remulla said, stressing that the removal was purely an exercise of presidential prerogative.

He further emphasized that the relief should not be interpreted as a punishment or demotion but part of the Chief Executive’s discretion to realign leadership in national police operations.

Speculation on Torre’s next role

Remulla also revealed that President Marcos is considering Torre for another role in government, although he stopped short of disclosing what position is being eyed.

Reports from inside the Palace suggest that Torre’s leadership style and strong following within the ranks may be tapped for a new appointment that continues to place him in a position of public service. For now, however, speculation persists until an official announcement is made.
