Torre eyed for new government post after PNP exit, says Remulla

Former Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Nicolas Torre III may soon take on another government role despite being relieved from his top police post, Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla confirmed on Tuesday.

In a briefing at Camp Crame, Remulla said Torre continues to enjoy the confidence of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. even after his removal as PNP chief last week.

“He (Torre) is being considered for another position because the President still believes in his capacity,” Remulla stressed.

Torre’s relief was formalized in a memorandum issued by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin on August 25. His departure paved the way for Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr., the Area Police Command chief for Western Mindanao and former Deputy Chief for Administration, to assume leadership of the 230,000-strong police force.

Nartatez officially stepped into the post on Tuesday, marking another transition at the helm of the country’s primary law enforcement agency.
