Dubai driver fined, ordered to pay AED 50,000 blood money after fatal scooter crash

Dubai Misdemeanor Court has ordered a Gulf national to pay AED 10,000 in fines and AED 50,000 in blood money to the family of an Asian man who died in a run-over incident on Al Wasl Road, Gulf Today reported.

The accident, which occurred last March, was reported to Bur Dubai Police Station. Investigators said the victim was riding an electric scooter when he was struck by a vehicle. He later succumbed to his injuries.

During questioning, the driver claimed the victim had suddenly crossed outside the designated pedestrian lane, leaving him unable to avoid the collision. However, a police sketch of the incident revealed that the motorist had also committed several violations, including running a red light, failing to slow near a pedestrian crossing, and neglecting to stay alert while driving.

Authorities also noted the victim bore partial responsibility for using the scooter across pedestrian lines without first ensuring the road was clear, instead of dismounting and walking across.

The court concluded that both the driver and the victim had shown negligence, which directly contributed to the fatal accident. As a result, the motorist was held criminally liable and ordered to pay both the fine and compensation to the victim’s heirs.
