The Sandiganbayan has reprimanded lawyer Iryl Boco after discovering multiple erroneous citations in pleadings she filed using artificial intelligence tools.
Boco, representing former Technology Resource Center deputy director general Dennis Cunanan in graft and malversation cases tied to the pork barrel fund scam, admitted in court that she relied on AI in preparing three submissions now flagged for “misquotations.” The court noted that some citations were “non-existent,” while others contained incorrect docket numbers, dates, or quotes that did not match the referenced material.
In its directive, the Seventh Division reminded her to “fact-check any AI-generated research and to strictly observe proper citations of legal authorities concomitant to her duties under the Code of Professional Responsibility and Accountability (CPRA).”
Boco apologized for the mistakes, acknowledging their seriousness. The court emphasized that despite her use of AI, “the ultimate responsibility of the misquotations ultimately fell on her shoulders as she signed the same.”
