Rechel in Dubai praised for rejecting P1 million offer to promote online gambling

Filipina content creator Rechel Hoco, widely known as Rechel in Dubai, is being hailed online for taking a firm stand against promoting online gambling—despite being offered a hefty sum of ₱1 million.

In a viral Facebook post, Rechel shared a screenshot of an email she received with the subject line “ONLINE SUGAL PROMOTION,” in which the sender casually offered her a lucrative deal to “singit” or sneak in gambling promotions into her content. Rechel publicly rejected the proposal, writing, “No to Promotion of ONLINE GAMBLING.”

The former waitress-turned-influencer reflected on her humble beginnings, revealing that growing up in poverty shaped her values. “Lumaki kami sa hirap. Naranasan ko ang mawalan, ang umasa sa swerte para lang may makain o maitawid ang araw,” she wrote. “Kaya alam ko kung gaano kasakit kapag ang konting kita, nauwi pa sa wala dahil sa sugal.”

Rechel admitted that this wasn’t the first time she had received such an offer. “I’ve received a lot of offers with different amounts… and to be honest, I still wonder, paano sila nakakayang mag-offer ng ganun kalaki?”

Her choice to stay grounded has earned widespread respect, especially as the Philippines continues to grapple with the growing issue of online gambling. Despite being banned for domestic audiences, illegal operators persist, and even licensed platforms—previously known as POGOs—were ordered shut down by the government in 2024 due to links with cybercrime and trafficking.

The comment section under Rechel’s post overflowed with praise.

“Let’s be the kind of influence that gives hope, not false chances,” said one user, to which Rechel replied in agreement. Another follower wrote, “I salute and admire you… Unlike other content creators, you didn’t grab the money and lose your conscience.”

Some commenters also pointed out the inconsistency in the industry, noting that major pageants like Miss Universe Philippines have been associated with gambling-linked sponsors. “So why is Miss Universe Philippines promoting Bingo Plus?” one asked.

Rechel, however, made her position clear: “As for me, I choose to stay true to my values.”

Her decision resonates deeply with many Filipinos—especially those who have witnessed the toll gambling takes on families. One user noted, “Nakakaawa yung pamilyang uuwi tapos walang pera ang tatay kasi pinatalo sa sugal… Hay buhay!”
