Trackless electric ART vehicles now serving Abu Dhabi’s popular routes

Abu Dhabi has rolled out a new Automated Rapid Transit (ART) service, a sleek, rail-less electric vehicle that is reminiscent of both a bus and a tram. Launched over the past weekend, this three-carriage, air-conditioned vehicle is now a regular sight on popular routes, where it stops to pick up eager passengers.

The ART, marked by the Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) insignia of the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT), first made its appearance on Yas Island and Saadiyat Island. It’s now extending its reach to the mainland, operating between Reem Mall and Marina Mall via Zayed the First Street, also known as Electra Street. For now, residents can experience this eco-friendly ride on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

Boasting a 200-passenger capacity, the vehicle offers seating similar to that of the Dubai Metro and features such as panoramic windows and digital stop notifications. The design allows for smooth lane changes, mirroring the maneuvers of a typical public bus. Stops for the ART vary, with some being dedicated stations and others being regular public bus stops, all marked with easily identifiable stickers.

This innovative transport solution, devoid of the usual train or rail system, promises to revolutionize urban travel. It’s a timely addition, especially as Abu Dhabi prepares to host over 150 events in the upcoming months.

Local residents are thrilled with this sustainable development. Patrick Ohana remarked on its novelty, saying it felt like a fusion of “a bus, tram, and train or metro.” Vibhor Gupta, another resident, commented on the importance of such a zero-emission solution during peak traffic times.

Described as “trackless trams on wheels,” the ART service provides connections to major destinations in the city. The service operates from 10 am to 2 pm from Reem Mall and from 11 am to 3 pm from Marina Mall. Up-to-date timings can be accessed via Google Maps and the Darbi app.

For more details on the ART service, commuters can scan QR codes on the vehicles and at select bus stops.
