SM City Fairview unveils country’s largest mall rooftop solar project

In celebration of its 40th anniversary, SM Supermalls has launched the country’s largest rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) system atop SM City Fairview, marking a major milestone in its push for sustainability and clean energy.

The installation boasts a 3.785-Megawatt peak (MWp) capacity, powered by 6,882 solar panels spread across 4.3 hectares. With this upgrade, about 11% of the mall’s annual energy demand will now be sourced from the sun—enough to run all 44 escalators and keep the mall’s lights on for over two years.

Each year, the solar facility is expected to produce up to 5,960 Megawatt-hours (MWh) of electricity, avoiding the emission of 4,133 tons of carbon dioxide—equivalent to removing over 900 cars from the road annually.

This latest project supports SM Prime Holdings’ broader goal of achieving Net Zero carbon emissions by 2040. Currently, the company has 73 MWp of total rooftop solar capacity across its malls, with plans to reach 100 MWp by the end of the year.

The project was made possible in partnership with Buskowitz Energy and adds to SM’s growing portfolio of renewable energy initiatives, which began with the country’s first mall solar rooftop at SM North EDSA in 2014.

Hans T. Sy, Chairman of SM Prime’s Executive Committee, continues to lead the group’s sustainability programs, which encompass energy efficiency, water and waste management, and environmental resilience.
