President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has rejected a proposed law that would have designated the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) as the National Polytechnic University.
According to Malacañang, the decision was based on PUP’s failure to meet certain criteria required by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) for establishing and operating both regular and extension campuses.
Palace Press Officer Claire Castro explained during a press briefing that the President supports the institution’s aspirations, saying, “The President expressed hope that the PUP will attain a national university status once they comply with the requirements.”
The veto means that for now, PUP will continue under its current status until it fulfills all CHED requirements necessary for national designation.
