Philippines ranks 90th in freedom and 99th in prosperity, lags behind regional neighbors

The Philippines has ranked 90th in the Freedom Index and 99th in the Prosperity Index out of 164 countries, based on the latest 2025 report by the Atlantic Council. The country scored 64.0 out of 100 in freedom and 61.3 in prosperity, reflecting low levels of freedom and prosperity compared to other East and Southeast Asian nations.

Among the 13 countries in the region analyzed, the Philippines ranks 9th in freedom and 10th in prosperity. In contrast, Japan leads the group with the highest scores—85.9 in freedom and 83.6 in prosperity—earning it top regional placement and global ranks of 18th and 24th, respectively.

The Freedom Index considers economic, political, and legal factors, while the Prosperity Index assesses healthcare, education, income inequality, and environment. According to the breakdown, the Philippines scored relatively low in key subindices such as Health (52.3), Environment (54.4), and Legal Subindex (61.5).

At the bottom of the regional list is Myanmar, with the lowest scores in both indices—28.4 in freedom and 22.5 in prosperity—placing it at 160th and 164th globally.

Globally, Denmark topped the Freedom Index with a score of 93.8, while Norway led the Prosperity Index at 96.7.
