Archer Aviation has taken a major leap toward bringing electric air taxi services to the UAE, completing its first successful test flights of the Midnight eVTOL (electric vertical take-off and landing) aircraft at Al Bateen Executive Airport in Abu Dhabi.
The historic demonstration marks a pivotal moment in Abu Dhabi’s push for next-generation air mobility, and was made possible through Archer’s partnership with the Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO) under the Smart and Autonomous Systems Council’s (SASC) strategy. The flight tested the aircraft’s ability to operate in the UAE’s extreme summer conditions, including high temperatures, humidity, and dust.
Senior officials from the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority, ADIO, the Integrated Transport Centre, Abu Dhabi Aviation, and Archer’s regional partners witnessed the trial.
“This flight is a key milestone in Abu Dhabi’s journey to becoming a global leader in advanced urban air mobility,” said Badr Al Olama, Director-General of ADIO. He added that through its Smart and Autonomous Vehicles Industry (SAVI) Cluster, the emirate is fostering innovation by creating an environment for future mobility solutions to grow and scale.
Adam Goldstein, Archer’s CEO and founder, emphasized the significance of the tests: “Our first test flights in the UAE represent a major step toward commercial launch in Abu Dhabi. Conducting these operations in the summer heat gives us critical data to advance both our certification and deployment strategies—locally and internationally.”
The test flight is part of Archer’s “Launch Edition” programme with Abu Dhabi Aviation, which aims to debut commercial air taxi services in the capital. This effort complements recent developments such as regulatory design approval for the UAE’s first hybrid heliport at Zayed Port and ongoing strategic partnerships in the region.
