A 92-year-old British man has been sentenced to life in prison for the 1967 rape and murder of a 75-year-old woman, marking the oldest cold case ever solved in the United Kingdom.
Ryland Headley was found guilty of breaking into the home of Louisa Dunne in 1967, where he raped and killed her. Nearly six decades later, justice has finally caught up with him.
Sentencing Headley at Bristol Crown Court, Judge Derek Sweeting delivered a powerful message: “You will never be released, you will die in prison.”
The judge described how Headley had “violated the sanctity and safety of Mrs. Dunne’s home where she had every right to feel secure.” He added that Dunne likely endured “considerable pain and fear before her death.”
Headley, 34 at the time of the murder, had a disturbing criminal history. In 1977, he was convicted for breaking into the homes of two elderly widows and raping them. While initially sentenced to life for those offenses, it was later reduced to seven years on appeal.
Judge Sweeting called the string of crimes a “chilling pattern of behavior.”
The breakthrough in Dunne’s case came in 2023, when police reopened the investigation and matched DNA from the original crime scene—including evidence from the victim’s skirt—to Headley.
Doughty Street Chambers, representing the accused, confirmed the case now stands as Britain’s oldest solved cold case murder.
