No traffic, no emissions—Dubai’s flying taxis are almost here

Dubai’s skyline could soon be buzzing with electric air taxis, following a successful test flight by U.S.-based Joby Aviation this week—an important step toward revolutionizing daily travel in the emirate.

The all-electric aircraft lifted off vertically from a remote desert site southeast of Dubai, flew several miles, and landed smoothly, simulating what a real passenger trip might look like in the near future. The event was witnessed by government officials and mobility industry leaders.

Joby’s electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft promises to slash travel times. A trip from Dubai International Airport to Palm Jumeirah, which takes about 45 minutes by car, could be cut to just 12 minutes by air, the company claims.

“We want to change the way people commute,” said Anthony Khoury, Joby’s UAE General Manager in a Reuters report. While the long-term goal is to make the service widely accessible, Khoury acknowledged that early adopters will likely come from higher-income brackets: “As with any novel technology, early days might be a bit more premium.”

The aircraft is capable of flying up to 160 kilometers at speeds reaching 320 km/h—all while producing zero operating emissions and low noise. “It will be flying in the city, next to residential areas, and hopefully people will barely notice it,” Khoury added.

Joby secured exclusive rights earlier this year to operate air taxis in Dubai through a partnership with the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), with commercial service expected to launch in 2026. Initial vertiports are planned at DXB, Downtown Dubai, Dubai Marina, and Palm Jumeirah.

Despite this momentum, the path forward isn’t without challenges. Joby’s stock took a hit in April after Morgan Stanley lowered its price target, citing execution risks and broader industry concerns. Still, the company remains optimistic.

“In aviation, you don’t see transformations like this,” said Didier Papadopoulos, Joby’s President of Original Equipment Manufacturing. “What you’re witnessing here is really exciting, and I’m excited for you to be riding this one point in the future.”
